Background of the Study
Training and capacity-building programs are essential for ensuring that healthcare workers possess the skills and knowledge required to deliver quality care. In Plateau State, Nigeria, continuous professional development initiatives have been introduced to enhance the competency of healthcare personnel, including doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals (Oluwaseun, 2023). These programs cover a range of topics from clinical skills and patient management to the use of modern technology and health information systems. Improved capacity among healthcare workers directly translates into better service delivery, improved patient outcomes, and increased efficiency within the healthcare system. Recent studies have demonstrated that regular training and capacity building contribute significantly to reducing medical errors and improving patient satisfaction. However, challenges such as inadequate funding, limited access to training resources, and high staff turnover may hinder the effectiveness of these programs. Evaluating the current state of training initiatives in Plateau State is crucial for identifying strengths, gaps, and opportunities for enhancing healthcare delivery (Adebayo, 2024). This study aims to appraise the training and capacity-building programs for healthcare workers in Plateau State, assessing their impact on professional performance and overall healthcare quality (Ibrahim, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare worker capacity in Plateau State, gaps remain in the training and professional development of health personnel. Many healthcare workers face challenges such as outdated curricula, insufficient practical training, and limited opportunities for continuing education. These issues result in suboptimal service delivery and may compromise patient care. Furthermore, inadequate training can lead to lower job satisfaction and higher turnover rates, further straining the healthcare system. The lack of comprehensive evaluations of capacity-building programs makes it difficult for policymakers to identify and address the specific needs of healthcare workers. Without targeted interventions to improve training, the quality of healthcare services in Plateau State may continue to suffer, ultimately affecting overall health outcomes (Chukwuma, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of training and capacity-building programs for healthcare workers in Plateau State.
  2. To identify challenges and gaps in current training initiatives.
  3. To recommend strategies for enhancing capacity-building efforts to improve healthcare quality.

Research Questions

  1. How effective are current training programs in enhancing the skills of healthcare workers in Plateau State?
  2. What are the main challenges faced in implementing capacity-building initiatives?
  3. What improvements can be made to training programs to optimize healthcare delivery?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Effective capacity-building programs are significantly associated with improved healthcare service quality.
  2. Inadequate training resources and high staff turnover negatively impact professional performance.
  3. Enhanced training programs will lead to improved job satisfaction and better patient outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on public and private healthcare facilities in Plateau State. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews with healthcare workers, and analysis of training records. Limitations include potential self-report bias and variability in training program quality across institutions.

Definitions of Terms

  • Capacity-Building Programs: Initiatives designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of healthcare workers.
  • Training: Formal education and skill development provided to health personnel.
  • Healthcare Quality: The degree to which health services increase the likelihood of desired health outcomes.
